FROGS & TADPOLES

Raising and releasing tadpoles or frogs and other amphibians is illegal in Alberta.

At Butterfly Wings n' Wishes Ltd we are committed to ethical treatment of animals, to educate the public on the conservation and management of wildlife, and to make the world a better place for generations to come.

Frog populations are in decline worldwide and many are at risk of extinction or already extinct. A major contributing factor is the spread of diseases by humans, such as Ranavirus and Chytridiomycosis. Ranavirus has a fatality rate of 90-100% in all species. Chytridiomycosis is sporadic, killing up to 100% in some species, and as low as 10% in others. Human activity is the main vector.

Research indicates that not only do frogs raised in captivity simply die when released: they kill wild amphibians in the same watershed by carrying diseases.  For this reason frogs can never be released to the wild. Never pour water from captive tanks into storm drains. Never release non-native species. These are all violations of our provincial wildlife act, as is the capture and containment of most native wildlife without a permit.

Data indicates this problem is getting worse, not better. We implore you to help, not hurt, our wild frogs, toads, salamanders, snakes, and other animals. Never capture animals from the wild. If you do, they must NEVER be released. Please contact Animal Care and Control or your local wildlife rescue if you have an animal that needs rehoming.
